THE STORY BEHIND "WE APPRECIATE YOU"

THE STORY BEHIND PROJECT

Being a longtime New Yorker, I’ve come to appreciate something very simple: this city is made better every day by ordinary people doing extraordinary—and sometimes very ordinary—things for one another.

It might be a firefighter or sanitation worker serving our city. It might be someone caring for a neighborhood, helping a stranger, picking up a piece of trash, holding a door, offering a seat, or simply showing kindness when no one is expecting anything in return.

Too often, those moments go unnoticed. I want to knowledge them.

That’s why I started "We Appreciate You NYC".

There’s no organization or committee behind this. I simply walk the streets of New York, and when I see someone doing something good for another person or for our city, I have an opportunity to stop, recognize them, and say:

NYC APPRECIATES YOU & GIVE THEM A SMALL TOKEN OF APPRECIATION.

After a lifetime of serving New York, this is simply another way for me to give something back—to recognize the people who make this city better through their service, their kindness, and the good they do every day.

One New Yorker recognizing another.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME

New York City has been my home for more than 35 years, and during that time I’ve had the privilege of serving this city and its people in many different ways.

I’ve worked as a lawyer/social worker in the New York City and New York State court systems, taught at Columbia University and other universities, and participated in charitable and community work here in New York.

Service has been an important part of my life.
